📘 Introduction

In our daily life, we often measure things that are not whole numbers. For example, the length of a pencil or the price of vegetables. To express such measurements, we use decimals.

Decimals help us write parts of a whole in a simple way.

📏 Tenths in Length

One centimetre is divided into 10 equal parts.

Each part is called one-tenth of a centimetre.
$\dfrac{1}{10}$ cm = $0.1$ cm

One-tenth of a centimetre is also called a millimetre (mm).

$1$ mm = $0.1$ cm

✏️ Measuring Length Using Decimals

If a pencil is $3$ cm and $6$ mm long, we can write it as:

$3.6$ cm

Similarly:

$0.9$ cm = $9$ mm
$30.5$ cm = $30$ cm $5$ mm

🐸 Frogs and Length

Some frogs are very small, while others are very big.

Gold Frog length = $0.9$ cm
Bull Frog length = $30.5$ cm

🔢 Guess, Draw and Measure

We often guess lengths before measuring. Sometimes our eyes can get confused!

Try guessing the length of:

An ant (less than $1$ cm)
A pencil (about $7$ cm)
A glass $11$ cm high

💰 Tenths and Hundredths in Money

Money also uses decimals.

$1$ rupee = $100$ paise
$1$ paisa = $\dfrac{1}{100}$ rupee = $0.01$ rupee

Examples:

$50$ paise = $0.50$ rupee = $0.5$ rupee
$99$ paise = $0.99$ rupee

🛒 Shopping with Decimals

If one egg costs $2.50$ rupees, then:

$1$ dozen eggs cost = $12 \\times 2.50 = 30$ rupees

🎨 Colourful Designs (Tenths & Hundredths)

When a square is divided into $10$ equal parts:

Each part = $\dfrac{1}{10}$ = $0.1$

If divided into $100$ equal boxes:

Each box = $\dfrac{1}{100}$ = $0.01$

🏃 Sports Day and Decimals

Distances jumped by students are measured in metres and centimetres.

$3.50$ m = $3$ m $50$ cm
$4.05$ m = $4$ m $5$ cm

📐 Converting cm to metres

We know:

$1$ m = $100$ cm
$1$ cm = $\dfrac{1}{100}$ m = $0.01$ m

🌡️ Temperature and Decimals

Temperature is also written using decimals.

$35.1^\circ$C, $23.2^\circ$C, $8.1^\circ$C

Decimals help us compare hot and cold places easily.
