Speaking About Past Experiences (Simple Past Tense)

21.1 Introduction

We use the Simple Past Tense to talk about actions or experiences that happened in the past and are finished now.

Words like yesterday, last night, last year, ago, and in 2022 are often used with the simple past tense.

21.2 Rules of Simple Past Tense

  • Regular verbs → verb + ed (play → played)
  • Irregular verbs → special forms (go → went)
  • Negative → did not + base verb
  • Question → Did + subject + base verb?
