कविता में एक लड़की और एक लड़का अपने खिलौने, किताबें और खाने की चीज़ें किसी से साझा नहीं करते, इसलिए वे किसी के दोस्त नहीं बन पाते। अंतिम अंतरे में बच्चा कहता है कि वह अपनी मिठाइयाँ, गेंद, किताबें और खेल सब बाँटेगा—आधा सेब, आधा केक भी देगा—क्योंकि साझा करने से सच्ची दोस्ती बनती है।
