Basic Sentence Structure (Subject–Verb Agreement)
20.1 Introduction
A correct English sentence needs a subject and a verb. The verb must agree with the subject in number and person. This rule is called Subject–Verb Agreement.
If the subject is singular, the verb is singular. If the subject is plural, the verb is plural. Learning this rule helps you speak and write grammatically correct English.
20.2 Basic Rules of Subject–Verb Agreement
- Singular subject → verb ends with -s / -es
- Plural subject → base form of verb
- I / You → base form of verb
- He / She / It → verb + s
