रॉबिन्सन क्रूसो लंबे समय से एक द्वीप पर अकेला रह रहा था। एक दिन उसे रेत पर किसी मनुष्य के पैरों का निशान दिखा। वह घबरा गया, हर झाड़ी-पेड़ उसे इंसान जैसा लगा और वह भागकर अपनी गुफा (जिसे वह किला कहता था) में छिप गया। कई दिनों तक डरता रहा, फिर हिम्मत करके वह फिर तट पर गया और निशान को अपनी पाँव की बनिस्बत नापा—वह उससे बड़ा था। उसे लगा कि कोई यहाँ आया था; शायद मुख्य भूमि के “जंगली” लोग नाव से पहुँचे हों। वह ईश्वर से रक्षा की प्रार्थना करने लगा। अंत में उसे भरोसा हुआ कि द्वीप पर कोई न कोई आता-जाता है—द्वीप आबाद हो सकता है। यह कहानी डर, जाँच-पड़ताल और सावधानी से सच का पता लगाने की सीख देती है।
